Prototype Machinist

The Prototype Machinist is involved in the process development and methodologies of manufacturing first run parts that will contribute and/or establish full production processes. Schedule is Mon-Thurs 6am to 4:30pm (4-10 hour days)

Responsibilities

The primary duties and responsibilities of the Prototype Machinist consist of but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrates effective and clear documentation of methods for future application(s) for production operations
  • Ability to complete new/existing machine setups
  • Perform in-process inspection of machined products (including documentation of results)
  • Assist in development of tooling, processes and fixturing for various machining operations
  • Complete machine preventative maintenance to include minor repairs
  • Complete secondary operations i.e. deburr, polish, etc. in cycle time per print and process
  • Collaborate with engineering units on part process initiation, improvement, and completion
  • Exhibit a working knowledge of health and safety, responsible for safety awareness, while upholding and improving the culture of safety within the organization. Identify opportunities for improvement and act if appropriate, before a problem occurs. Report potential hazards, unsafe working conditions, unsafe equipment, unsafe acts, and injuries immediately
  • Other tasks as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Minimum Requirements – High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two-year certificate in machine trades – preferred
  • Minimum work experience – 5 years in a manufacturing environment in relating to machine trades and the products produced preferred
  • Prior experience in prototype or piece work preferred

Competencies

  • Strong CAD/CNC programming skills
  • Knowledge of SPC and ERP systems
  • Knowledge of various/unique setup/fixturing techniques
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication
  • Ability to research new tooling trends and operations pertaining to prototyping and production
  • Proficient in GD&T
  • Strong mathematics and trigonometry skills
  • Strong Trigonometry skills preferred
  • Understanding of multiple manufacturing processes
  • Highly detailed
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Able to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Understanding of tools required to check product to guarantee part quality

Physical Requirements

· Various sitting periods throughout the shift

· Frequent lifting of materials up to 30 lbs., occasional lifting to 70 lbs.

· Pushing/pulling carts and/or pallet jacks

· Dexterity – with computers, ability to type, use of mouse, at a computer

· Continuous use of hands and upper extremities in fine and gross manipulation using various wrist positions and grip/pinch spans to operate equipment, push buttons, carry boxes, push carts, etc.

· Frequent firm grip with tools requiring torque to tighten machine parts, tooling, and fixtures

· Dexterity – with computers, ability to type, use of mouse, at a computer

· Must be able to meet customer demand requirements for performing visual inspection and/or other product acceptance activities with or without accommodation (only for positions in which this is a requirement of the job per the customer requirement)
